Chennaiyin FC 1-3 Mohun Bagan highlights, ISL 2023-24: Manvir, Cummings, Petratos goals guide Mariners to win against Marina Machans

Manvir Singh, Jason Cummings and Dimitrios Petratos get on the scoresheet as Mohun Bagan Super Giant bags a 3-1 win against Chennaiyin FC, which still searches for its first point of the season.

It is 10 wins in 10 matches for the Mariners.

Petratos goes for a curler from a long way out. It is not the strongest if shots but still requires a save from Samik for a Mohun Bagan corner.

Crivellaro crosses into the box and Vincy tries to get a header away, but could not reach the ball.

Romario makes a good run and squares the ball to Crivellaro. Crivellaro goes for the shot from the edge of the box, but Glan gets a good block. That is exactly he has been brought on by Ferrando.

Crivellaro tries to find Romario with an outside-of-the-boot pass. Romario almost gets to the ball but Hamills does well to intercept the pass with the stretch of his boot.

Petratos goes low from a corner and Manvir goes for a cheeky flick. He catches the ball well and Samik had to get a touch to get the ball away from danger.

Petratos’ first-time pass finds Sadiku, who does well to keep the ball. He cuts in and tries to return the favour by setting up Petratos for the shot. Petratos would have, if not Jiteshwor’s timely block.

Crivellaro finds Bikash with a good cross inside the box from a Chennaiyin freekick. Bikash has a free header but completely botches the effort and sends the ball wide.

Sahal shows his class yet again with a brilliant through-ball to Manvir on the right flank. Manvir goes for a low cross, in the hope of finding Sadiku but the ball is cut out.

Farukh goes for a cross but gets it horribly wrong as he sends the ball towards the stands.

Crivellaro’s immaculate vision allows him to thread a pass to Farukh, who runs at goal with the ball. In the end, he overruns the ball and Kaith collects. The flag did come up for offside but the replay showed that he was on.

Sahal makes a talismanic run to penetrate the CFC defence. He then spreads the ball to Manvir, who was completely unmarked on the right. Manvir goes for a shot and rattles the roof of the net to restore Mohun Bagan’s two-goal lead.

Crivellaro goes for a shot from the freekick. The ball takes a slight deflection and ends up in the back of the net.

Sahal brings down Jiteshwor and Chennaiyin FC has a freekick in a dangerous position. Crivellaro will take it.

Rahim Ali shows great feet to make a run from midfield and beat Thapa. He goes for a shot from distance but cannot keep the ball on target. Full marks to Chennaiyin for intent till now in the second-half.

Rahim Ali’s cutback misses everyone and the loose ball goes to Sangwan. Sangwan takes a shot but it is blocked. The danger is still there as Sangwan finds Farukh with a slide rule pass. Farukh goes a shot from a tight angle but Subhasish gets a crucial block.

Crivellaro sends the ball to Rahim, who gets inside the box. He does not get the ball on his favourite right-foot but goes for an outside-of-the-boot shot. The effort is wayward and not on target.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant has a 2-0 lead against Chennaiyin FC as the second-half gets underway at the Marina Arena.

A late goal by Cummings and another by Petratos keep Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a 2-0 lead against Chennaiyin FC at the break.

Sahal takes a shot from the edge of the box, which takes a deflection and falls kindly for Cummings who had remained onside. Cummings sees the opportunity and pounces on it, as he dinks the ball over Samik to score the second for the Mariners.

Four minutes added at the end of the first-half!

The Mariners are just not stopping. Manvir darts down the left flank and sends the ball to Boumous. Instead of going for the shot, Boumous sends the ball to Petratos, who does take the shot. The shot was goal-bound but Bikash makes an excellent block to thwart the danger.

Another fine move by Mohun Bagan as Sahal finds Petratos inside the box again with a cutback. Petratos goes for a first-time shot but fails to hit the target.

The Mariners are enjoying 75% of the ball at the moment and it is not just hogging the ball. Ferrando’s men are creating the chances as well.

Hamill shoots on the turn. It is a good shot, which forces a save from Samik. The Mariners have Chennaiyin in a vice grip right now and the home team cannot find a way to relieve the pressure.

Liston shows good vision to thread a pass to Boumous on the left flank. The CFC defence was completely split for a second, as the Frenchman went for a cutback. However, Chennaiyin’s backline does well to anticipate the ball and clear the danger.

Sahal takes a shot from close distance, which is saved well by Samik. The ball was still creeping inside the net but Sangwan stayed alert to make the clearance.

The danger is not over as the Marina Machans cannot get the ball away. Liston sends the ball to Sahal again, as he goes for a curler this time. The ball takes a deflection and goes out of play.

Liston does well to shield the ball from Ninthoi on the right touchline and wins a freekick after the former showed too much enthusiasm to win the ball.

As the match has its first drinks break, Mohun Bagan has clearly been the better team in the first-half. Chennaiyin has created some meaningful attacks, but the final third play has been poor from Coyle’s men.

Petratos finds Cummings with a measured cross from the right. Cummings almost gets the ball under his control but fails to do so as the CFC defence gets the ball away to safety.

CFC Booking: Farukh gets the first booking of the night as he gets a yellow card for his late challenge on Boumous.

Ayush had a chance to send a good cross inside the box, with Connor Shields in support in the middle. But the cross is wayward and the attack comes to an end.

Sahal shows some exquisite footwork on the right flank to get the better of his marker. He then spots Petratos and crosses the ball to the near-post. Petratos meets the cross with his head and finds the net.

Petratos swings an excellent cross inside the box from a freekick. It is a deep cross and the ball reaches Sahal. Sahal opens up his body and tries to place the ball to the top-corner but sends the ball above the target.

Farukh does well to get past Manvir on the left flank. He goes for a low cross but Subhasish intercepts the cross and concedes a corner.

Connor Shields flashes a shot across the face of goal, but Anwar Ali did well to put pressure on the CFC forward. The shot goes wide.

Anwar Ali pulls the trigger from the right edge of the CFC penalty area. Samik had dived but the shot is not on target.

It seemed like Rahim Ali had a clear run at goal after being slipped a good pass but the CFC forward had not timed his run properly and is flagged offside.

Ninthoi with an early chance as he makes a good run behind the defence. He was under pressure, which prompted him to take a shot. He blasts the shot above the crossbar.

Battocchio goes for a cross from the right flank but the Mariners defence deals with it easily. Rahim Ali was there in the middle but the ball was too high for him.

Mohun Bagan straight for the kill as Cummings take an early shot. Chennaiyin’s backline is under pressure right from the start. Nothing less than what we expected.

The ISL 2023-24 match between Chennaiyin FC and Mohun Bagan Super Giant is underway at the Marina Arena in Chennai.

It will be an intense battle between the reigning champion and a former two-time champion. However, Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Chennaiyin FC have had contrasting starts to the new Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24) season.

Bagan, undefeated this season, has two wins on the trot, while home team Chennaiyin is yet to win its first match, having lost to Odisha FC and NorthEast United FC.

But for Owen Coyle’s Chennaiyin, it will be its first home match (for Bagan, it’s first away contest), and the Marina Machans will be eager to win with the support of the home crowd when it takes on Bagan here on Saturday.

Bagan’s head coach Juan Ferrando, too, knows that the home team will be hungry for a win and will advise his team against complacency.
